ABC13 town hall to focus on Hispanics and mental health!

Houston, Texas (KTRK) – If you or someone you know is going through a crisis, call the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline at 1-800-273-TALK (8255) or call the Crisis Text Line by texting HOME at 741741. Reach out to Trans Lifeline 877-565-8860 (US) or 877-330-6366 (Canada) and The Trevor Project at 866-488-7386.

While our Hispanic and Latino communities have similar vulnerabilities to mental health issues as the general population, experts say they face more barriers to access and quality of treatment.

According to NAMI35.1% of Hispanic and Latin American adults with mental illness receive treatment annually, compared to the US average of 46.2%.

Eyewitness News anchor Rita Garcia gathers experts at City Hall on Thursday, October 6 (7:00 – 8:00 p.m. DST), to highlight why these disparities exist and connect you to resources that can save your life or the lives of the people you love.

Among the speakers at City Hall Thursday:

  • Dr. Christian Zinni, McGovern College of Medicine at UTHealth Houston
  • Evan Sanchez, Houston Millennials
  • Laura Hidalgo, Entrepreneur and Mental Health Advocate
  • Patrick McElvin, Walking for Mental Health Awareness

Viewers can submit their questions for possible inclusion at City Hall on Thursday here:

Poverty, language barriers, a lack of cultural competence among some mental health providers, immigration status and stigma surrounding mental illness are all factors that experts say affect the well-being of our Hispanic and Latin American communities.
